Starting to Paint Inside...

It's finally time to start applying the paint to the inside of our home on Washington Street. We opted to use Sherwin-Williams Harmony because it is a zero-VOC product. Thanks again to Sherwin-Williams for working with us and for supplying these wonderful products.

Since much of the home has new sheetrock and (or) texture, we knew that it would take two coats to get good coverage. We began with a white primer to seal the walls because new wall texture soaks up paint like a sponge.

Tip: The primer coat is a great time to use up old paint, as long as the tint is not too different from your final color. Also, the sheen of the primer coat should be the same or less than your final coat. ie; don't use a glossy primer and a flat top-coat, but you can do the reverse. Just be sure to mix that old paint very well. Many paint stores will even shake old paint for you if you take it to them.

To give the Sherwin-Williams paint a good test, we decided to apply some of it via roller and some in the pro sprayer. Bob sprayed the bedrooms and Frank rolled the 'man cave'. In both areas, we found the products to go on smoothly and to cover very effectively. They had so much body that one coat would have probably covered but we opted to go ahead and use a primer, just to be sure. Bob was very pleased that the paint flowed very smoothly through the sprayer with no clogging at all. And since it's all water-washable, clean-up was a snap!

BTW, here's what we used, including quantities, sheen and colors:

All Sherwin-Williams Harmony interior acrylic latex. 13 gallons satin SW7029 Agreeable Gray for walls 2 gallons semi-gloss SW7005 Pure White for trim

We also went through about a dozen tubes of Sherwin-Williams 1050 QD caulk.

When we get everything finished, including the trim, we will post some pictures of the final results!
