Prepping for Paint

An experienced painter friend of mine used to say that the most important step in a good paint job is the prep that you do before you ever touch a paintbrush. This is especially true when you are working on a vintage home such as our Washington St. project. It is critical to fill every hole and crack, smooth out any uneven joints, and make sure that all repairs are complete before you move forward.

We spent the day doing just that. Trevor finished installing both the inside and outside window trim, Bob caulked every possible joint and crack that he could find, and I supervised!

For caulk, we chose a Sherwin-Williams latex that is easy to apply, low-VOC, and cleans up with water. It will last many years and is eco-friendly.

Quick Tip: Any time that you are applying wood outdoors, such as the trim around our windows, paint the back of each piece before you install it. You can use any leftover paint. That helps to seal it and it will last many years longer than wood that is not back-primed. Plus you can use up all of that old paint that's in the garage!
