Installing New Windows

We are very fortunate on our remodeling project on Washington Street to have some help from a couple of local fellows, Bob Helton and Trevor Starring, who do light remodeling on the side. As soon as we arrived with our new windows (see previous blog post about window selection), Bob and Trevor got to work. I helped a bit by handing them tools and making occasional runs to Home Depot for more materials.

First, Bob and Trevor removed the old windows using a reciprocating saw to cut through the existing nails which held the old units in place. Each was carefully set aside. We will save the best few for potential refurbishing in the future. The others that could be salvaged are going to a remodeling friend who will be using them in some of her historic projects in Ft. Worth.

Next, all rotted wood was removed and replaced with fresh lumber. Then each new window was tilted into place and screwed in securely through the fins that surround the window frame. New sheetrock completed the inside trim which will be textured to match the existing walls. I stuffed all open cavities with fiberglass insulation and expanding foam. The final step was trimming the outside frames with 1"x 6" pine which had been primed on both sides to resist weathering. The trim will be painted later to match the exterior of the home.

Then we all stood back and surveyed the new windows. Wow, what a difference! (more pictures coming soon)
